Champaign County Museums Re-Open for Visits

March 6, 2021 By From The Editors

See what local museums are doing to provide a safe, distanced experience for guests as they reopen. Updated as of March 5, 2021.

Krannert Art Museum, Urbana

Hours: 10 am to 4 pm daily; open late on Thursday evenings when class is in session.
Senior Hours? Not at this time.
Admission? Free
Website: https://kam.illinois.edu/

  • A timed reservation system has been instituted. Please plan ahead and reserve a time for your visit at this link: Krannert Art Museum Timed Reservations
  • Gallery capacity is posted in museum spaces and reservations will be accepted for up to 20 people per hour. Walk-ins are also allowed, space-permitting.
  • When you arrive, please give your name or show your reservation email to the gallery attendant. Walk-in visitors will be asked to sign in.
  • Accessible entry to the museum is through the automated doors to the Kinkead Pavilion (Sixth Street) near the Hive exhibition.
  • Please read posted information as you enter. An attendant will be nearby to answer questions as you continue to the galleries.
  • Face coverings are required. The University of Illinois requires cloth or disposable face coverings to be worn in all public buildings (age 2 and older).
  • Please keep 6 ft of distance from other visitors as you enter and proceed through the galleries.  Waiting areas adjacent to elevators, smaller galleries, and exits have additional signs marking safe distances.
  • Gallery capacity is also posted. If you encounter a gallery at capacity, please wait to enter.

Museum of the Grand Prairie, Mahomet

Hours: Open 1- 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday.
Senior Hours? Not at this time.
Admission: Free

  • You can reserve a time by visiting the museum’s website at www.museumofthegrandprairie.org or by calling (217) 586-2612.
  • Visitation will be limited to 25 individuals inside the museum at a time and only those with a reservation will be allowed in.
  • If you stop by the museum without a reservation, you may be able to make one on the spot by scanning the QR code outside the main entrance.
  • They highly recommend calling ahead or making a reservation online. (Reservations are going quickly, especially on weekends.)
  • Face coverings and social distancing will be required for all visitors. A mask can be provided if you’ve left yours at home.

Homer Lake Interpretive Center

Hours: Open 1- 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday.
Senior Hours? Not at this time.
Admission: Free

  • Only ten individuals will be permitted inside the center at one time to allow for adequate social distancing within the building. No reservations are required but you may need to wait a short while to maintain the ten person limitation.
  • Fortunately, Homer Lake Forest Preserve offers plenty to do while you wait your turn; take a walk on one of the many wooded trails or grab a seat on a bench by the lake.
  • Face coverings and social distancing are also required at the Interpretive Center, with masks available at the door should you need one.
  • Contact the staff at the center if you have questions, (217) 896-2455, or visit www.homerlakecenter.org.

Hours: Open Tuesday – Sunday. Hours differ a bit each day. Check here.
Senior Hours? Not at this time.
Admission: Free

  • Use the glass entryway closest to the bike rack and parking lot to enter the Museum. The previous main entrance is now exit-only. Signage has been posted nearby.
  • Face masks are required to be worn by everyone age 2 and older. Disposable masks will be provided if you forget your mask. If you are unable to wear a mask due to medical issues, you will be required to wear a face shield. Unfortunately, if you are not able to wear a mask or face shield (in the instance of a medical issue), you will not be able to enter the Museum.
  • You will be required to provide your name and contact information at the Information Desk upon entering the Museum in case contact tracing is needed. You can provide this information verbally or write it on a slip of paper. Contact information will be securely stored.
  • 40 visitors will be allowed in the Museum at a time due to new capacity in adhering to social distancing measures. Security and Visitor Services staff will keep track of the number of visitors in each gallery and promote social distancing and continued cooperation with University policies.
  • No advanced reservations are required for groups of 4 or fewer at this time.
  • If you plan to visit in a group of 5 or more, book your visit in advance.
