But don’t just take our word for it.
Kiplinger.com searched for 50 great places — one town per state — for early retirees to settle in, focusing on areas with lower living costs and favorable tax situations.
The result: Kiplinger named Champaign-Urbana the best place in Illinois for early retirement. “This part of central Illinois, home to the University of Illinois and Parkland College, offers affordability with no shortage of things to do, including college sporting events, film and music festivals and educational opportunities. The metro area is also home to a number of tech startups, fostered by the University Research Park’s 43,000-square-foot business incubator called EnterpriseWorks. So young retirees can enjoy small-town charms and costs while exploring and developing big ideas and innovations.”
But wait — there’s more …
Livability.com has found that the best places to live often have colleges or universities. Reasons include a regular influx of new residents, cultural activities and economic stability.
The site ranked Champaign-Urbana one of the top 10 college towns in the U.S. in 2018.
They said: “It’s a great place to live, even if you’re not a student. Champaign is conveniently located near three major U.S. cities (and their airports) — Chicago to the north, St. Louis to the southwest and Indianapolis to the east — so residents (and employers) can get anywhere in the world with relative ease. But beyond that, Champaign has a delicious dining scene, an awesome farmers market and tons of outdoor recreation options, making it an ideal place for anyone to live.”
And then there’s the cost of living — 14 percent below the U.S. average, based on BestPlaces.net’s cost of living index.
Champaign’s housing cost led GoBankingRates.com to name Champaign-Urbana in 2019 the best place in Illinois to live on a fixed income. “The median home value in Champaign-Urbana is roughly $76,500 cheaper than the U.S. median home value, making homeownership a little more accessible for people who live on a fixed income.”
There’s a lot more to know about the area so please dig into the website. You’ll find lots of things to do, health and wellness resources, financial information. We think you’ll find that Champaign-Urbana really is a great place to live and to retire.
