CHAMPAIGN – Attention gardeners in Champaign-Urbana: here’s one way to conserve water and help your plants, too.
The cities of Champaign and Urbana are once again sponsoring a rain barrel and composter sale to encourage more environmentally friendly practices among its residents.
Some residents of Champaign and Urbana will have the ability to buy rain barrels at an even more highly subsidized cost (see below for eligibility).
Residents of Champaign County can now order rain barrels and composters for a cost of $55 each, which includes delivery.
Champaign Stormwater Utility Fee payers can purchase barrels at $26 (includes $29 subsidy) for unlimited barrels. You will be contacted if your purchase is ineligible following municipal review.
Urbana Stormwater Utility Fee payers are limited to the purchase of 2 subsidized barrels at $30 each (includes $25 subsidy). You will be contacted if your purchase is ineligible following municipal review.
Composters are also available. Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. According to epa.gov, food scraps and yard waste together currently make up more than 30 percent of what we throw away, and could be composted instead. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
According to epa.gov, collecting roof runoff in rain barrels reduces the amount of water that flows from your property. It’s one way to conserve water — and it’s free water for use in your landscape.
Order your rain barrel and/or composter online at https://rainbarrel.ca/urbana/. At this time, the sale is accepting prepaid orders only.
This sale benefits residents of Urbana and Champaign and includes home delivery beginning June 15, 2021, continuing until completed.
